    Stafford Country Club Golf Course Superintendent


    Responsible for golf course operations and maintenance of historic Stafford Country Club.  A summary of the history of the course is located here:  http://www.staffordcc.com/about-us/history. The responsibilities include: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, member relations, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. The Golf Course Superintendent works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, members, guests and the property.


    • Responsible for all phases of Golf Maintenance and Agronomic operations, cost control, and personnel.
    • Oversees the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and wetlands on the facility grounds. Provides detailed annual plan for the various property levels and the designated landscaping areas. Includes rotational design to provide facility with fresh, eye-catching, interesting and pleasant atmosphere.
    • Willingness and desire to expand and improve knowledge of latest techniques and methods of maintaining and improving turfgrass management.
    • Directs and assists the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement, spraying, pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs, the preparation of soil plant beds for aesthetically pleasing arrangements and tending to high stress areas.
    • Responsible for all aspects of maintenance, development and care and replacement of all property, including but not limited to the golf course equipment and buildings, including the pro shop, clubhouse and pool and all other grounds and equipment.
    • Develops and adheres to the annual operating budget prepared by the Superintendent and the Chairman of the Greens Committee and approved by the Board of Governors and plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects.
    • Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses associated with Golf Course Operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers.
    • Manages water usage and irrigation systems and provides annual reporting on retaining ponds, wells and other water source usage.
    • Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the Club's grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Maintains records and completes required reporting. Order parts, supplies and equipment as needed.
    • Agrees to keep the Chairman of the Greens Committee fully informed on all matters related to the conditions and maintenance of the golf course.
    • Works closely with the Board of Governors and the Chairman of the Greens Committee to operate the Golf Course in a fiscally responsible and professional manner. In cooperation with the Board of Governors and the Chairman of the Greens Committee, he shall render professional advice, opinions, assistance and service as required.  He shall participate on the Greens Committee and be available to attend regular and special meetings of the Board of Governors.
    • Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Head Golf Professional on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
    • Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds.
    • Participates in the designs and landscape plans for facility grounds and implements the plan.
    • Train, direct and supervise his staff of employees and volunteers of the Club so they may perform their duties in an efficient, safe and exemplary manner.
    • Recruits, hires, supervises and retains maintenance staff. Conducts employee performance evaluations and exercises disciplinary action.
    • Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
    • Oversees subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment. Plans and budgets for additional or replacement capital equipment.
    • Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to members.
    • Administers and enforces all Club rules, regulations and policies for staff. Must be able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver.
    • Agrees to follow whatever record keeping, purchasing practices, and other administrative policies that may be required.
    • Coordinates snow removal and winter maintenance activities when necessary.  Some of these activities include but are not limited to winterizing clubhouse, halfway house, pool complex, pro shop and on course restrooms.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • 3-5 years experience as a Golf Superintendent or 1st Assistant
    • 2-year Degree or Certificate in Turf Management (or related field, like agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil science).
    • Prefer computer skills required for financial reporting and control of operations, including use of Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Valid Driver's License.
    • Pesticide Application License
    • Prefer Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.  Prefer working knowledge of the specific grasses at Stafford.
    • Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in golf course construction and maintenance work.
    • Skill in recruiting, hiring, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.
    • Interpersonal skill to resolve conflict and work with Board members, Committee members, USGA officials, employees, members and the general public.
    • Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products.
    • Knowledge of working ecosystems and environmental risks.
    • Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules and methods of play.
    • Ability to anticipate personnel, equipment, and material requirements related to golf course maintenance and repair assignments.
    • Ability and knowledge to lay out irrigation patterns, drainage patterns, construct tees and/or greens.

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

    This is not a nine to five job, and may require long hours on occasion.  Applicant should be physically fit and capable of fairly strenuous activity. 

    Salary and Benefit Expectations

    Negotiable based on years of experience and qualifications.  Expected range to be $55,000-$75,000 starting salary.  The Club will pay a portion of your health insurance, annual vacation and sick leave will be available, dues will be paid for in GCSAA, a truck will be provided for business and personal use, and expenses involved in attending regional or national educational seminars and GCSAA International Golf Course conference and show will be provided.  Golfing privileges will also be granted.
