THE AUSABLE CLUB AND GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT JOB OVERVIEW
The Ausable Club is a private country club in St. Huberts (Keene Valley), NY with a rich tradition for over 100 years. The club’s amenities include a historic clubhouse, highly respected mountain golf course, private forest reserve (the Adirondack Mountain Reserve), state of the art swimming pool complex, a la carte dining facilities and catering operations.
The Ausable Club is seeking a dynamic and accomplished golf course maintenance professional to provide strong golf course, grounds and landscaping skills and visible leadership to a long-established club. The Club’s Golf Course Superintendent must be experienced in the oversight,directing, and participating in the daily maintenance and operations of the golf course to deliver an exceptional golf experience to the membership. The Golf Course Superintendent must possess organizational and time management skills as this position has a variety of traditional and non-traditional responsibilities. Finally the position requires excellent interpersonal skills to deal with the membership and staff of the Club.
The ideal candidate will be of high integrity, excel at collaboration, operate with a strong team spirit, and possess the ability to manage effectively. Experience in the private club industry is a significant plus. This is a full-time annual position that oversees the golf course, grounds and landscaping functions of the club and comes with an excellent benefits package and excellent quality of life. This team member will report directly to the General Manager.
GOLF COURSE OVERVIEW
The Club’s 9-hole mountain golf course is a par 33 that covers 35 acres and measures 2,260 yards. It hosts approximately 3,000 rounds annually. The greens are Bent and Poa Annua and the Fairways are Rye/Blue/Fescue. The tees are Rye & Blue Poa annua. The golf maintenance staff is comprised of four seasonal employees; maintenance of the equipment is outsourced.
GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT JOB DUTIES (BUT NOT LIMITED TO)
▪ Maintains all grounds and course maintenance equipment according to the club’s turf management program.
▪ Schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to department.
▪ Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department.
▪ Supervises all planting, fertilizing, care and removal of turf, plants, shrubs, trees and other facilities on the golf course.
▪ Maintains course in proper playing condition.
▪ Inspects course regularly to evaluate and recommend improvements.
▪ Oversees all construction, maintenance and renovations on the golf course.
▪ Oversees repairs of broken water lines/valves; may perform necessary repairs in an emergency.
▪ Records all maintenance on course.
▪ Supervises operation of equipment repairs.
▪ Prepares annual budget for department; takes corrective action as necessary to help assure that budget goals are met.
▪ Establishes short- and long-range plans for the golf course.
▪ Selects and prepares proper fertilizers and nutrients for all flora and fauna.
▪ Develops and maintains drainage, irrigation and watering systems.
▪ Implements and enforces comprehensive safety program for employees, members, and guests on course in compliance with local, state and federal laws; implements and manages the club’s hazard communication (HAZCOM) program.
▪ Ensures that chemicals, petroleum and other controlled products are used, stored and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations; maintains required records and strives to minimize the use of chemicals and petroleum products.
▪ Communicates as necessary with Golf Professional to discuss conditions of facilities, maintenance plans, scheduled events and the number of rounds played.
▪ Communicates as necessary with Grounds, Golf or House committees.
▪ Attends staff and management meetings.
▪ Keeps members informed about current and future maintenance activities.
▪ Assists with snow removal planning.
▪ Makes recommendations for capital improvement and purchases.
▪ Supervises road and roadside maintenance within the club’s grounds.
▪ Ensures proper landscaping for property outside of golf course including the clubhouse and surrounding areas.
▪ Coordinates applicable work with outside contractors.
▪ Determines when course should be closed due to weather conditions that may damage the course if play continues.
GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
▪ Candidates should have a career path marked with stability and progression of title and responsibility while showing ongoing professional development, as well as career path marked with verifiable accomplishment as a team builder and leader.
REQUIREMENTS
▪ Candidates should have a two- or four-year degree in Agronomy or a turf related field and at least five years of experience in the Golf Course Maintenance Industry in which three to five years were as a first assistant. GSCAA membership is preferred but not required. Candidates must be innovative and bring knowledge of industry best practices to the Club.
▪ Impeccable and verifiable references; all candidates will be subject to a background review.
▪ The ability to work “hands on” with other staff and managers, and to mentor, train and lead.
▪ Interaction with the membership is both expected and strongly encouraged.
▪ Outstanding communication skills are required as is a strong moral character.
POSITION COMPENSATION
The salary for the Club’ Golf Course Superintendent is open and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
